exhaust thoughts for TB
« on: October 28, 2009, 05:56:25 PM »

i wanna do an exhaust but instead of it exiting out the back i think i might want dual outlets coming out both sides. but im not sure cuz i still want to beef up the suspension and take it off roading.

It's an inline six, so no real need for dual exhaust. Keep it single. I could see a Flowmaster 40 series, or a Mangaflow muffler sounding nice on there. 2.25" I think is the stock pipe size, I wouldn't go higher than 2.5" otherwise it'll sound really raspy. I'd throw a glasspack to cut down on the rasp and add a deeper tone.

If its a six it might not be that raspy, or at least thats based off what ive seen.

Id say make sure you put a cat in there (hi flow preferably). Might want to do a little research and make sure you wont have any CEL issues.

Think chaos is right, stick with single if it is. and 2.5 is plenty for most N/A sixes unless youve added some real power to the motor.

GM's are fickle with the annoying P0420 code. In Guy's case, his best bet is to leave it alone, unless he plans on getting an 02 sim, or a performance PCM in the future.

There's nothing wrong with dual exhaust on an L6... it'll sound good on both sides that way.

The name of the game is modding and the goal is to do whatever YOU want to do.

Flared outlets dumping out before the rear tires would look and sound cool. If you do that you'll have to hang custom hangers in place (universal hangers, grind a spot on the frame, weld it in place, spray with Rustoleum Undercoat or POR15 in a rattlecan)...

Best results would likely stem from a carefully chosen, but cheap (like a Series 40 or glasspack) cat-back setup. Cheapest, too, and shouldn't be any codes, depending on location of sensors.

As long as the stock cat is left alone, it shouldn't throw any codes.

If you're gonna go dual Guy, find a single in, dual outlet muffler, but it'll cost a good penny to snake two sets of pipes out the back, that is, if there's space under the chassis for it.

Which is why dual side outlets are easy. And you can really open up your muffler options by splitting the exhaust after the pipe with a Y, this way its not TOO quiet and definitely not restricted.

They should make high-flow cats for this thing that's OEM sensor compatible... what about the cat (or partial exhaust) off the TB SS?

If you did rear exit exhaust w/ duals, you'd have to use a different tailpipe assembly, one that splits like a Y but with the outlets spaced way apart. Like on Cope's car.

Or be cool and DGAF, and just put a turndown after the cat and call it a day, haha. But like I said you need to research the location of downstream sensors... like in the muffler or if it's got multiple cats, there may be as many as 4 or 5 sensors in the exhaust stream. Poke around, do your research, use Google to see what others have done. Have a plan of attack is all I recommend. It'll save you a lot of money... but you knew that.

You could always tune out the after-cat O2 sensor.  Thats what I did.
